Toronto DJ Aeryn Pfaff Being Creative for Good in 2020
Pride began as a protest. Sometimes it’s easy to forget that. It’s easy for all of us to lose sight of the freedoms we have if we forget to look at the past, lest we let history repeat itself. Artists and Performers like DJ Aeryn Pfaff have had rough go in 2020, but the good ones never stopped reminding us about love and togetherness – and they never let us forget about history.
I started producing the Toronto Creatives vlog because I genuinely love to learn about how other entrepreneurs and creators work. What gets them out of bed in the morning, what drives them to make things, and what holds them back. When I first contacted Aeryn I thought we would be talking about his experience as a working artist during the COVID-19 pandemic, and how hard it is to get on. It was incredible that when we started talking that Aeryn was more interested in discussing how we as creators – all of us – can help others, and make a difference.
While many have used our time inside to experiment with bread recipes or dig deep into long-term goal projects, Aeryn and many others have been continuing to demonstrate, raise awareness, and fundraise for social organizations such as Black Lives Matter Canada and Water First. After all, there is still a lot to be said and a lot of work to be done, even in Canada.
There are currently over 60 active water advisories in Canada that disproportionately affect Indigenous Reservation Communities across Canada. They have been listed as active long-term advisories as far back as 1995. For more information visit: The Water First Website
In the most recent 100 shootings by Canadian police Black and Indigenous Canadians have been disproportionately represented per-capita. There have already been more deadly police shootings in 2020 than in 2019. – Source, CTV News – For more information on Black Lives Matter Canada visit: The Black Lives Matter Canada Website
